SHEIKH ZAYED PROJECT

On May 2014 I visited the Sheikh Zayed Mosque in Abu Dhabi. Since then I ́ve been working on a project inspired by this unique experience.

On arriving to the mosque, western woman have to change clothes and dress into a chador. Then you must take your shoes off to visit the sacred temple and walk through the carpet that was made specifically for this place.

We ́re talking about the largest carpet in the world, it has 5700 squared metres and it was designed and sewn in Iran by 1200 iranian women. The floral pattern never repeats itself and when walking through it, it seems as it willl never end.

The feeling of infinity on my bare foot was absolutely shocking and on arriving back to Madrid I started drawing a series of watercolours based on the experience.
In addition to the photos I took, there is a video of my feet walking through the carpet. This video will be edited as a loop creating the sensation of “infinite carpet”.

The project pretends in some way to pay tribute to this women who sew with countless knots this unique piece of art. And on the other hand it ́s a personal way of understanding and getting to know it.
