VIRGINIA FRIEYRO 108

The Virginia Frieyro 108 Project consists of a sequence of watercolors that create a vast mural of 108 drawings.

It was produced over a whole year, between the 22nd December 2017 and the 11th December 2018. Each drawing leads to the next and joins with its neighbors above and below, and each one expresses a vital moment in the artist’s life, so the whole work is a record of successive moments of real time. For the artist the project is an emotional record of a year in her life.

The number 108 was proposed by the artists´ yoga trainer who was guiding Virginia in a difficult moment in her life.

It´s a number deeply bound to Eastern traditions. And has a very significant meaning:

Number 1 represents the Individual, who has to reach 0, the void, bottom out, to achieve number 8, which is the infinite illumination. Nirvana.

Furthermore, each drawing is dedicated, and includes the name of a historic woman artist who died or was born on the same date that the drawing was made. In this way the artist wants to make her personal homage to all of them. Women who have stayed in the shadows for so long, and that should be claimed and brought to light. To infinite, to illumination.

On May 30th 2019, the whole piece of art was displayed altogether for the first time in a performance that took place in Casa Banchel, Madrid. It was the first time that the artist herself saw the whole piece altogether, it was an unveiling moment. In the performance she discovered live the whole mural.

The performance was recorded on a video that is available on Youtube :
